Resumo: This dissertation investigates the mechanical behavior of structural beams made from bamboo slats, emphasizing their potential as a sustainable alternative in cons-truction. Through an extensive experimental program, the research assesses the performance of beams reinforced with metal straps and threaded rods, focusing on three bamboo species: Dendrocalamus asper, Phyllostachys pubescens, and Phyl-lostachys bambusaides. The study explores the impact of reinforcement techniques on the structural integrity and load-bearing capacity of the beams, providing valuable insights into the use of bamboo as an eco-friendly construction material. The results reveal that bamboo, particularly when reinforced, demonstrates significant mechanical properties that can rival traditional construction materials. Microscopic characterization and tensile testing were employed to further understand the material’s structural properties, showing that bamboo’s strength is complemented by its environmental benefits, such as rapid growth and high carbon sequestration capa-city. Despite challenges like variability in performance across species, the findings underscore the viability of bamboo as a key player in sustainable construction. This research contributes to the growing body of knowledge on bamboo-based materials, highlighting their potential in reducing the environmental footprint of the construction industry. Future studies are recommended to focus on the long-term durability of bamboo structures, optimization of reinforcement techniques, and comprehen-sive life cycle assessments to fully realize the material’s sustainable potential.
