Summary: The formation of residual soils from the weathering of rocks gives these materials a peculiar geotechnical behavior, whose complexity is accentuated by the presence of structure, cementation and the unsaturated state in which they are frequently found. In addition, the investigation of residual soils presents challenges associated with their heterogeneous nature and the preservation of the relict structures of the parent rock. This work reviews the sampling techniques and field investigations most commonly used in these materials, based on data found in several literary publications. Geotechnical parameters of residual soils of different origins are also compiled, revealing a great variability. Finally, several geotechnical applications in slopes, tunnels and foundations are discussed, demonstrating the practical relevance of these soils in geotechnical engineering.
